 Hotham
Hotham Herald - 9-8-2011

The week ahead...

The action is set to continue at a fast pace with heaps of events in store. Be sure to check out the action in Heavenly Valley this weekend, as competitors in the Hotham Banked Slalom (snowboard only) and Hot Ham Banked Slalom (ski and snowboard) take on the Gun Barrel run on Saturday.

If you haven't seen enough thrills and spills throughout the day, be sure to come along to the Summit base on Saturday night as Jimmy Blaze returns to Hotham for his Extreme Snowmobiling show at 6pm, followed by a huge fireworks show.

Have some more fun when you join in the Zipfy demo weekend from 10am each day! Inspired by the Olympic sport of luge plus coal shovel racing, the lightweight Zipfy is compact and fast! There will be giveaways, fun races plus special deals on Zipfys at Hoys. Head to the snowplay area adjacent to the Corral Day Carpark.

Don't miss the exhilarating excitement of the Sled Dog races in Dinner Plain this weekend as the Advance Sled Dog Challenge showcases the top sled dog racers in Australia. More than 75 mushers (sled dog drivers) and 350 dogs are expected to compete this year over an electrifying two days of competition.

On your way to or from Dinner Plain, stop by the action at the Whiskey Flat Biathlon range. See some of Australia's best biathletes compete in sprint and distance events to determine who will be the 2011 National Biathlon Champions.

and the week past

After an unseasonably warm week last week, the skies opened up over the weekend to deliver some much needed snow to the resort. Hotham was definitely pumping on the weekend with a visit from the Oakley Rebellion tour, the SKImag demo weekend and an action packed events schedule including the FIS ANC SBX event, the Pub to Pub Cross Country Ski race and the Colin & Alice Paul Biathlon Commemorative Weekend.

An exhilarating day was had by all as the five-nation final of the FIS Australia New Zealand Continental Cup SBX event took place at Hotham on Sunday.

Aussie and world number one Alex 'Chumpy' Pullin was the hot favourite for first place in the men's final but raced in to claim silver behind Shinya Momono, the current Japanese junior Snowboard-X champion. Momono has been tipped to be the next big thing in the world of snowboarding at only 18 years old. Grabbing a hold of the bronze medal was American Michael Perle.

Australian female riders dominated the podium in the final with Belle Brockhoff, Amanda Taylor and Hotham's Alexandra Lockie stealing the glory of first, second and third places.

Jimmy Blaze extreme snowmobiling

Hotham Alpine Resort welcomes the return of international airborne snow superstar, Jimmy Blaze, showcasing his mind-blowing stunts in a highly anticipated free event this Saturday evening from 6pm at the base of the Summit.

En route from Alaska and headed for Russia, this freestyle snowmobile extraordinaire will take flight at Hotham in one explosive show on Saturday August 13, performing his signature airborne moves, on a snowmobile.

Blaze, from Anchorage in Alaska, cemented his name in sporting history when he set a new flip record at the 2009 Winter X Games - a back flip on a snowmobile at 121 feet in the air!

Cory Davis, also a Winter X Games medal winner and fellow Alaskan, will join Blaze for his 2011 show. Two riders, more tricks and more action!

Spectacular fireworks (weather permitting) from the Summit will top off what promises to be an extraordinary and exciting visual experience, not to be missed.

Hotham Banked Slalom this weekend

This Saturday we present to you not one, but two banked slalom events!

The Hotham Banked Slalom is the largest snowboard event in Australia. Open to all snowboarders, legendary Hotham locals and an international line up take on Heavenly Valley's Gun Barrel for a chance to be crowned 2011 Hotham Banked Slalom Champion. Local rider Cam Bolton will be looking to follow up his impressive rides in the FIS ANC SBX last weekend with a big result this Saturday.

Big White is proud to be supporting the Hotham Banked Slalom with the fastest run receiving entry into the Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom in 2012 at Big White. Included in this huge prize are return airfares thanks to Air Canada, accommodation, lift passes, event entry and transfers to Big White from Kelowna Airport.

The Hot Ham Banked Slalom, the third event in the A La Carte in the Park Series is also being dished up on Gun Barrel and is open to both skiers and snowboarders
of all ages. Participate and top up your series points!

Registration for both events is available online or from Guest Services or Boardbox in Hotham Central.

Presentations and after party at The General with old school rock cover band Noxy Snood.
